Johana Ortiz’s Handsome Devil is an honest and haunting investigation of the aging process within in a family unit. Inspired by the work of Danny Lyon, this photographer focuses on the people and places closest to her at a pivotal time when roles are reversing and the idea of home shifts as a family member is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
“While the idea that we photograph the things closest to us the best seems simple, I find it an extremely complex and challenging way of making art. Photographing people and objects I have a close relationship with forces me to reevaluate what I already know about them, and to be willing to accept that what I understand to be true about them may not be the truth at all.”
While the series focus mainly on the demise of Johana’s stepfather, the central subject, over time the work reveals a more complex portrait of a family and of the artist herself. The unique presentation on the walls mimics the casual yet intimate experience of being invited in to someone’s living room to experience their most cherished family photos.
Johana Ortiz received her M.F.A. from Tufts University and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and currently resides in California.
